April 30, 2012 marks the 15th anniversary of the death of my mother, Mary Virginia ‘Ginny’ Tighe Fleming. I mark this date and anniversary not because she died rather due to the nature of her death, at the hands of another.
My mom was the first Shenomenal Woman I have had the honor to know. She taught myself and my siblings the importance of not judging people without taking the time to get to know them. She taught us that civic engagement was a responsibility. She taught her daughters that their gender should never be a stumbling block in attaining their dreams. She taught usthat having those dreams and working towards their reality was a path well chosen. She taught us that you are never too old to learn something new. She taught us that reinventing yourself may be challenging and in the end worth the effort. She taught me to stay open to the possibilities. Perfect? Perhaps not but to me a Shenomenal Woman, the first of many in my life!
